Egypt boosts gas supply with LNG cargoes for summer

Egypt is bolstering its natural gas supplies to tackle surging summer demand for electricity, the state news agency MENA reported on Monday.

The Ministry of Petroleum spokesperson announced that Egypt’s gas production currently sits at 5.7 billion cubic feet per day.

To address the increased consumption, 21 liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargos are scheduled to arrive throughout the summer, supplementing domestic production.

The first LNG shipment has already reached Egypt and is being integrated into the national gas grid.

“By the third week of July,” the spokesperson assured, “the national gas grid will have a sufficient supply.”

This follows Egypt’s largest-ever purchase of seaborne fuel in June, securing 20 LNG cargos specifically for the high-demand summer months (July-September).

Egypt has been facing dwindling natural gas reserves, a challenge further exacerbated by a growing population and expanding cities with rising electricity needs.

During the summer, air conditioning use spikes, driving power consumption even higher.

To combat persistent power cuts worsened by recent heatwaves, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stated last month that Egypt requires approximately $1.18 billion worth of imported natural gas and mazut fuel oil.

These imports will be crucial in ensuring a stable electricity supply throughout the summer.
