AU PSC calls for emergency summit on Sudan War

The African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) has called for an emergency summit to address the escalating conflict between the General al-Burhan’s forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

During the 1218th meeting chaired by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, PSC Chairman, the council proposed the summit to discuss the situation in Sudan.

Key participants included AU Commission Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat and IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu.

The PSC emphasized that a ceasefire can only be achieved through direct negotiations between the warring factions. An Ad-hoc Presidential Committee, led by President Museveni and including one Head of State from each region, was established to facilitate these talks.

The Council urged Sudan’s leaders to meet under AU and IGAD auspices.

Previous attempts by IGAD and the Saudi-US-led Jeddah process to organize such meetings failed due to accusations of bias.

The Council called for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian access, and protection for aid workers.

It also directed the PSC Sub-Committee on Sanctions to identify and address external actors supporting the conflict within three months.
