Guinean military authorities have apprehended French journalist Thomas Dietrich in the capital, Conakry, amidst growing concerns over the state of press freedom in the West African nation.
Dietrich’s arrest took place on Sunday while he was conducting an investigation into alleged corruption within Guinea’s National Oil Company (Sonap).
His focus was on understanding the methods through which certain officials in the transitional government of Guinea accumulated their wealth. The journalist had been in the country for several days, specifically delving into the affairs of Sonap.
This marks not the first instance of Dietrich facing arrest in Guinea. In March 2020, he was detained and subsequently deported after capturing footage of a police crackdown on an opposition demonstration in Conakry.
The current situation does not provide clarity on whether Dietrich has been deported following this recent arrest.
