The Ekiti state government announced on Sunday that the six Nigerian students and three teachers who were abducted by gunmen while returning from a school trip last week have been freed.
Unfortunately, the driver of the school bus did not survive the ordeal.
The statement from the Ekiti state government did not disclose whether a ransom was paid or provide specific details about the students’ release.
Kidnappings for ransom by armed groups have become increasingly prevalent across Nigeria, extending beyond the northwest region to target villagers, motorists, and students.
The private primary school students, who were held captive, were released in the early hours of Sunday. Tragically, the driver of the school bus lost his life during the incident.
The state government assured that the rescued students would be transported to a local hospital for medical treatment and post-trauma therapy.
