Numerous residents in Senegal’s capital have reported an inability to access mobile data on their phones since the morning.
The situation unfolds as Senegal’s parliament is set to discuss a proposal to delay the presidential election, initially slated for February 25, for a potential six-month period.
Opposition figures are mobilizing for a demonstration outside the parliament.
Tensions escalated in Dakar a day prior, marked by violent street protests that prompted security forces to deploy tear gas against demonstrators.
During the unrest, at least one senior opposition figure was arrested. Anticipating potential disruptions, the Sonatel workers’ union, Senegal’s primary telephone operator, expressed disapproval of any government move to cut off or restrict internet access.
This incident follows a similar suspension of mobile data in June of the previous year, coinciding with heightened tensions in the country.
