Cholera toll in Sudan: 10,000 cases, 285 deaths reported

The Sudanese Ministry of Health disclosed an escalation in cholera cases, surpassing the 10,000 mark, with a total of 285 reported deaths across the country as of January 29, 2024.

The outbreak, originating in Gedaref and Khartoum states in September of the preceding year, has rapidly extended its reach to Al-Jazirah, White Nile, Red Sea, and Kassala. In January, it further spread to the River Nile and Northern states.

The Red Sea State is currently experiencing the highest impact, grappling with 3,561 reported cases and 125 fatalities. Following closely is Gedaref with 2,097 cases and 50 deaths, while Al-Jazirah has reported 1,861 cases and 26 deaths.

Other affected states and their respective figures include White Nile (1,642 cases, 33 deaths), Khartoum (587 cases, 28 deaths), Kassala (139 cases, 13 deaths), Sennar (129 cases, 5 deaths), Nile River (62 cases, 2 deaths), North River (13 cases, 2 deaths), and Blue Nile (3 cases, 0 deaths).

Responding to the crisis, Sudan initiated a second vaccination campaign against cholera in Khartoum in December, focusing on high-risk areas.

This initiative follows the initial campaign in Gedaref and Gezira states last November, utilizing 2.2 million doses provided by the Global Mechanism for the Elimination of Cholera.
