Niger reshuffles cabinet, appoints new ministers for mining and energy

Niger’s military government has implemented a reshuffle, announcing new appointments for key positions in the ministries of mining and energy.

The restructuring involves the division of the previous combined ministry of mines, petrol, and energy into three distinct roles, as revealed on Monday.

Under the changes, Mahaman Moustapha Barke Bako, who previously held the position of minister of mines, petrol, and energy, will now serve as the minister of petrol.

Professor Amadou Haoua has been appointed as the new minister of energy, while Colonel Ousmane Abarchi will assume the role of minister of mines. The reshuffle, announced via a decree on state television, did not provide specific reasons for the changes.

These ministerial appointments hold significant importance for Niger, a West African country where a military takeover occurred in July, leading to the removal of the democratic government.

Niger plays a crucial role as one of the world’s leading producers of uranium, a key resource in nuclear energy production.

In addition to uranium, Niger is actively working to enhance its oil production capabilities. The country aims to increase its daily oil output from approximately 20,000 barrels to 110,000 barrels with the inauguration of the Niger-Benin oil pipeline, which commenced operations late last year. The reshuffling of ministerial roles reflects the government’s focus on managing and optimizing these critical sectors for national development.
