Sudan permits aid to arrive through Chad and South Sudan

A military-led government in Sudan has announced its approval for certain humanitarian aid to be transported through Chad and South Sudan.

Previously, deliveries via Chad had been banned after Sudan accused the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of using aid convoys to supply weapons to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a claim denied by the UAE.

The UN humanitarian co-ordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, welcomed the decision, emphasizing that it would facilitate reaching individuals in “dire need of life-saving assistance.”

The government has agreed to open airport routes for humanitarian aid in Fasher, Kadugli, and El Obeid.

The conflict in Sudan, spanning over 10 months between rival military forces, has resulted in thousands of casualties and approximately eight million people displaced.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) warns that if the fighting persists, Sudan could face the world’s largest hunger crisis.
