West Africa plagued by severe internet outages

A widespread internet disruption has struck West and Central Africa, with Ivory Coast bearing the brunt of the impact, according to reports from the monitoring group NetBlocks.

Multiple failures in the sub-sea cables responsible for connecting the region to the internet have been reported by operating companies. However, the precise cause of these disruptions remains unclear.

NetBlocks has highlighted that internet functionality in Ivory Coast has plummeted to a mere 4% of its expected capacity. Additionally, countries such as Liberia, Benin, Ghana, and Burkina Faso have also experienced significant disturbances.

Users in South Africa are also grappling with reduced speeds, with telecoms company Vodacom attributing the issue to “multiple sub-sea cable failures between South Africa and Europe,” as reported by website News24.
