Sixteen Nigerian soldiers killed in Delta State community clashes

According to an army spokesperson, sixteen Nigerian Army soldiers were fatally attacked by youths earlier this week as they sought to quell community clashes in the oil-rich southern Delta state.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau revealed that the troops, belonging to the 181 Amphibious Battalion, were responding to tensions in the Okuoma community when the deadly incident occurred on Thursday.

“The reinforcement team led by the commanding officer was also attacked, leading to the death of the commanding officer, two majors, one captain and 12 soldiers,” Gusau said.

Following the tragic event, the chief of defense has ordered an immediate investigation into the matter and urged for the apprehension of those responsible. Gusau also mentioned that some arrests have already been made, with efforts underway to uncover the motives behind the assault.

The Delta state region frequently witnesses clashes, at times fatal, stemming from disputes over land ownership or compensation for oil spills attributed to energy companies operating in the area.
