Biden signs funding bill, keeps US agencies running

US President Joe Biden signed into law a crucial funding bill passed by Congress, ensuring the continued operation of federal agencies through September and preventing a potentially damaging partial government shutdown.

Biden expressed his satisfaction with the bipartisan legislation, stating, “The bipartisan funding bill I just signed keeps the government open, invests in the American people, and strengthens our economy and national security.”

Despite senators missing the midnight deadline to pass the $1.2 trillion package, they managed to approve a resolution in the early hours of the morning that had previously passed the House.

In addition to signing the funding bill, Biden urged lawmakers to approve further funding for national and border security.

He emphasized the importance of advancing the national security supplemental and implementing bipartisan border security reforms, describing them as “the toughest and fairest reforms in decades.”

Biden’s message to Congress highlighted the urgency of addressing these critical issues.

The day was marked by high-stakes drama on Capitol Hill, with the House of Representatives passing a $1.2 trillion, six-bill package representing a significant portion of federal funding.

With the prospect of funding running out at midnight for key government agencies, including defense and homeland security, the Senate faced pressure to advance the legislation to Biden’s desk before the deadline.

Negotiations over the budget appeared to be on the verge of collapse as both parties sought to adjust the legislation to align with their respective campaign messages and priorities leading up to the presidential election in November.

However, a last-minute agreement was reached just before the midnight deadline, allowing the Senate to pass the resolution in the early hours of the morning.

Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer hailed the bipartisan agreement as a victory for the American people, emphasizing the importance of reaching a consensus to fulfill crucial funding obligations.

Republican Senator Mitt Romney acknowledged that while the appropriations bill was not without flaws, he voted in favor of it due to its provision of essential funding for the military and border security.

Despite the challenges and imperfections, the passage of the funding bill represents a significant accomplishment for lawmakers in addressing the nation’s financial responsibilities and ensuring the continued operation of federal agencies.
