RSF leader calls for peace, justice on anniversary of Sudan conflict

RSF Commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo in a speech on the one-year anniversary of the Sudan conflict, which RSF says was ignited by the former regime and elements within the Sudanese Armed Forces, recounted the events leading to war and emphasized the RSF’s commitment to peace and democratic civilian rule.

Dagalo highlighted the RSF’s efforts towards security and military reform and lamented the betrayal of these principles by the former regime and extremist elements within the SAF leadership.

RSF leader described the devastating impact of the war, including widespread destruction, displacement, and human rights abuses.

Despite the challenges, Dagalo reaffirmed the RSF’s commitment to sustainable peace and outlined their vision for resolving the crisis, which includes addressing root causes, implementing transitional justice, and establishing a new unified Sudanese army.

Dagalo urged Sudanese citizens to reject hate speech and tribal divisions, emphasizing the importance of unity in achieving peace.

Calling for international inquiries into the instigators of the conflict, Dagalo reiterated the RSF’s readiness to observe a ceasefire to facilitate humanitarian access and political negotiations.

RSF leader ended his words by expressing hope for a peaceful and prosperous Sudan and also pledged to prioritize the protection of civilians and advocating for peace at every opportunity.

Sudan has been mired by fighting between the army, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is the head of the ruling Sovereign Council, and the RSF.

At least 13,900 people have been killed and more than eight million displaced in the conflict that started in April 2023, according to UN figures.

Several cease-fire agreements brokered by Saudi Arabia and US mediators have failed to end the violence.
