Nigerian socialite faces charges for throwing money in air

Renowned Nigerian socialite and entrepreneur, Cubana Chief Priest, faced legal action for his extravagant money display at various social gatherings, a practice locally known as “spraying.” During his recent court appearance in Lagos, where he goes by his real name, Pascal Okechukwu, he entered a plea of not guilty to three counts of currency misuse.

Authorities allege that Okechukwu recklessly threw banknotes into the air, a behavior deemed offensive as it risks trampling and damaging the currency. This customary act, prevalent at Nigerian festivities like weddings, serves as a gesture of gratitude.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria’s premier anti-crime agency, spearheads a crackdown on all forms of currency misuse. Okechukwu stands accused of tampering with 500 naira notes at events hosted in Lagos this year.

Following his court appearance, Okechukwu, proprietor of a prominent nightclub in Delta State, took to social media to express gratitude to his followers. Despite being granted bail at Lagos’ Federal High Court, he faces a significant legal battle.

This incident mirrors recent cases involving public figures. Notably, internet personality Bobrisky received a six-month prison sentence for a similar offense, reflecting growing judicial scrutiny over currency abuse. Actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin also faced legal consequences earlier this year for mishandling new naira notes.

The EFCC’s ongoing investigation targets numerous celebrities implicated in currency abuse, signaling a broader crackdown. With hundreds facing potential prosecution and several already convicted, the agency underscores its commitment to upholding currency integrity.
