Rescuers searching for 91 missing in Kenya flooding, death toll rises to 46

Kenya’s interior ministry reported ongoing search efforts for at least 91 individuals missing amidst extensive flooding across the country.

The death toll climbed to 46 following a mudslide and flash floods in Mai Mahiu town, central Kenya, on Monday morning.

Survivors recounted harrowing experiences of water sweeping away homes, vehicles, and even railway tracks. Resident Anne Gachie described the overwhelming force of the water as it inundated her home, forcing her family members to scramble for safety.

An additional 53 people were reported missing in Mai Mahiu by the interior ministry, while the Kenya Red Cross received reports of 76 missing persons. Since last month, heavy rains and flooding have claimed the lives of at least 169 individuals in Kenya, displacing over 185,000 people according to government statistics.

The toll extends beyond Kenya, with intense downpours in Tanzania and Burundi resulting in further casualties and displacements. Scientists attribute the heightened frequency and intensity of such extreme weather events to climate change.

In Garissa county, eastern Kenya, 16 individuals are reported missing following a tragic incident where four people lost their lives when their boat capsized over the weekend. The region has been grappling with flood-related emergencies.

Last year, Kenya experienced devastating flooding attributed to the El Nino weather phenomenon, claiming around 120 lives. These deluges followed a severe drought, underscoring the volatile weather patterns affecting East Africa.
