Morocco hosts landmark ‘African Lion’ military exercise

The 20th edition of the “African Lion” military exercise commenced Monday in Morocco, marking a significant milestone in the program’s history.

The joint US-Morocco led exercise will run from May 20th to 31st across several central and southern Moroccan regions.

This year’s iteration is considered the largest African Lion exercise to date, boasting the participation of 7,000 personnel from over 20 African nations and NATO member states, according to a statement released by the Moroccan army.

Troops will engage in a variety of combined exercises, including day and night tactical drills encompassing land, sea, and air operations.

Special forces exercises, airborne maneuvers, and operational planning simulations are also planned for participating Task Force staff.

The “African Lion” exercise has evolved significantly since its inception in 2007 as a bilateral exercise between Morocco and the US.

Over the years, it has expanded to include European and African armies, solidifying its position as a premier military cooperation platform on the continent.
