Ruto justifies use of private jet for US visit amidst financial strain

Kenyan President William Ruto has come under scrutiny for his recent use of a luxury private plane during his historic trip to the United States.

Addressing concerns, Ruto defended his decision, asserting that it cost taxpayers less than $80,000.

Ruto’s visit to the U.S. marked the first state visit by an African leader since 2008 and the first by a Kenyan leader in two decades.

During his time there, he engaged in discussions with President Joe Biden and sealed several significant deals with the United States.

However, controversy ensued over the expenses incurred for the trip, especially as ordinary Kenyans grapple with soaring living costs and various tax hikes imposed by Ruto’s government.

Local media reports indicated that Ruto had chartered a Boeing 737-700 business jet for the journey, sparking further debate on the appropriateness of such expenditure.

Responding to allegations that he had spent exorbitant amounts, Ruto dismissed claims of a $1.5 million expenditure, labeling such suggestions as baseless.

He emphasized his responsibility as a steward and clarified that the actual cost was significantly lower.

Speaking at a national prayer meeting in Nairobi, Ruto disclosed that the trip cost the Republic of Kenya less than 10 million shillings, approximately $76,000.

Ruto explained that initially, he had sought to book a flight with Kenya Airways but was deterred by the high cost.

Consequently, he opted for a private plane, aided by contributions from undisclosed associates, to keep expenses within a reasonable range.

Throughout his tenure, Ruto has emphasized fiscal prudence, urging Kenyans to adapt to austerity measures and live within their means despite challenges.
