Suspected Islamist rebels killed at least 10 people in an overnight attack on the village of Masala in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, local officials and a civil society leader reported on Saturday.
Armed men attacked the village in Beni territory, North Kivu province, on Friday night, according to military administrator Charles Euta Omeonga.
Civil society leader Justin Kavalami attributed the attack to members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), the same group blamed for another recent village assault that killed at least 16 people earlier this week. Kavalami stated that more than 13 people were killed in the Masala attack.
The ADF, originally from Uganda, is now based in eastern Congo and has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. They frequently launch attacks, contributing to the instability in a region already plagued by numerous militant groups.
Attempts to reach the ADF for comment were unsuccessful.
