Rwanda concludes campaign period with elections

Three weeks of campaigning ended Saturday in Rwanda ahead of Monday’s presidential and legislative elections.

Polls open at 7 a.m. local time for 9.5 million eligible voters, says the National Election Commission.

The commission will announce provisional results next Saturday, with final results on July 27.

Three presidential candidates are in the race: incumbent Paul Kagame, Frank Habineza, and Philippe Mpayimana.

Kagame, in power since 2000, is expected to win a fourth term due to his widespread support.

He secured the 2017 election with over 98% of the vote. A 2015 amendment allows him to run for three more terms.

The ruling Rwandan Patriotic Front, in its manifesto, aims for progress on National Vision 2050, promoting sustainable development and better quality of life for all Rwandans.

Over 500 candidates vie for 80 parliamentary seats.

All three presidential candidates held their final rallies in Kigali.

Kagame’s significant popularity makes him a favorite, say political commentators. Rwanda’s election results are highly anticipated.
