Café bombing kills 16 in Nigeria’s Borno State

A bomb exploded at a village café in Borno state, Nigeria, on Wednesday, killing 16 people and injuring several others. The attack occurred in Kawuri village, a few kilometers from Maiduguri, the state capital.

No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing. Following the incident, the government imposed a 24-hour curfew. This attack comes just a week after a landmine explosion on a nearby highway killed seven soldiers.

Local resident Kachallah Goni reported hearing a loud explosion at around 1930 GMT. Mustapha Modu, a local vigilante, stated he recovered at least 20 bodies from the scene.

Nigeria continues to grapple with severe security issues, including an ongoing Islamist insurgency in the northeast, separatist violence in the southeast, oil theft in the Niger Delta, and kidnapping for ransom. On Thursday, widespread protests erupted across Nigeria addressing these security concerns, the rising cost of living, and governance challenges.
