Deadly terrorist rampage kills 15 in Niger

Fifteen civilians were killed and several injured this week in terrorist attacks on villages in western Niger, near the Burkina Faso border, according to a statement by the army on Wednesday.

In Mehana, terrorists carried out violent acts against defenseless civilians, resulting in 14 casualties on an unspecified date.

This followed the death of another civilian in the same region on Tuesday.

Mehana, one of six areas targeted in Tillaberi, is frequently attacked by terrorists affiliated with the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda, leading to significant displacement of civilians.

On Tuesday, in Tillaberi, a violent clash occurred between an army unit and terrorists near Chatoumane, leaving one civilian dead and three others injured.

The army reported neutralizing several terrorists.

Niger, ruled by military leaders following a July coup, faces violence from Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province.

Militants have killed about 1,500 civilians and soldiers in Niger over the past year.
