Floods displace 1M in Nigeria’s Borno State, governor Says

Floods in northeastern Nigeria’s Borno state have affected up to 1 million people, Governor Babagana Zulum said on Wednesday, as rescue operations continue to evacuate residents and provide temporary shelter.

The flooding was triggered by the overflow of a dam following heavy rains, which devastated communities and even submerged a state-owned zoo, releasing crocodiles and snakes into the floodwaters.

Local authorities have described the disaster as the worst flooding the state has seen in 20 years. Emergency services are working to relocate those displaced by the floods to safer areas and provide aid.
