Senegal experienced a nationwide electricity outage on Thursday after an accident at the 90,000-volt Hann power station in the capital, Dakar. The accident triggered a larger disruption on the country’s interconnection grid, leading to widespread power cuts, according to a statement from Senegal’s power utility, Senelec.
While no additional details were provided about the nature of the accident, the outage affected electricity distribution throughout the country.
In response, Senelec announced that power was being gradually restored in certain regions, including parts of Dakar.
This incident follows a decade of significant reforms and investments aimed at improving Senegal’s power supply after a severe energy crisis had crippled businesses and led to widespread unrest.
“Adversity is not a dead end but a path to progress, as long as we remain resilient.”
