An Iranian court has cleared two imprisoned journalists, Niloofar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi, of collaborating with the U.S. and significantly reduced their prison sentences.
Hamedi and Mohammadi, who were originally sentenced to 13 and 12 years respectively, will now serve five years, judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir announced on Sunday.
The journalists had been jailed for their coverage of Mahsa Amini’s death in police custody, an event that ignited mass protests in 2022, marking Iran’s largest unrest since the 1979 revolution.
