South Korea has donated 21,000 tons of rice, valued at $14.2 million, to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Kenya.
The donation aims to assist refugees and vulnerable schoolchildren in the country.
The contribution is double the amount South Korea provided in 2023. It will sustain food assistance for over 565,000 refugees and schoolchildren in Dadaab and Kakuma camps, according to a statement from WFP on Tuesday.
WFP’s Kenya country director, Lauren Landis, expressed appreciation for the donation, highlighting its timely arrival.
She noted that the WFP’s resources are currently stretched, and needs are rising fast.
“This generous donation will make a tangible difference in the lives of thousands of people, providing them with much-needed sustenance during these challenging times,” Landis added.
The number of refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya has surged to over 760,000, marking a 60% increase in the past five years.
Landis emphasized the growing demand for food aid as a result.
Nam Sangkyo, the deputy ambassador of Korea to Kenya, reaffirmed Korea’s commitment to addressing food insecurity.
He stated that Korea remains dedicated to supporting Kenya in its efforts to combat malnutrition and hunger among vulnerable populations.
