Pro-SAF journalist detained over social media post

Abdul Majeed Abdel Hameed, a journalist with a pro-army stance (SAF), was arrested in Gedaref state on Sunday following a Facebook post alleging misconduct by the Central Bank of Sudan.

Abdel Hameed claimed the bank awarded a currency printing contract to a Russian firm over a lower-cost, secure bid from an American company.

Agents from Sudan’s Federal Investigation Bureau detained Abdel Hameed under cybercrime laws, and he was later transferred to Port Sudan, Sudan’s temporary capital.

In a Facebook post just before his arrest, Abdel Hameed stated, “I have been arrested by the investigation bureau and am on my way to the central bureau in Gedaref state,” attributing the arrest order to Red Sea state authorities.

This is not Abdel Hameed’s first encounter with authorities; he was previously detained in July after disclosing details about a meeting between a Saudi official and the Sudanese Intelligence Director.

According to sources, the Governor of the Central Bank had initiated legal proceedings against him over recent critical articles. Although influential figures sought his release on bail, authorities denied the request, ordering his immediate transfer to Port Sudan.

Abdel Hameed has been a prominent supporter of General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) amidst its ongoing conflict with the Rapid Support Forces.
