Winnie Byanyima, wife of Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye, expressed doubts about a fair trial after her husband was detained in Kenya, returned to Uganda, and charged in a military court with weapons-related offences.
Byanyima, a U.N. agency chief, called the charges politically motivated, urging President Museveni to halt the criminalization of opposition. Uganda’s government denies accusations of abduction, while the military insists on the court’s impartiality.
Besigye, Museveni’s former ally turned rival, has lost four contested presidential elections. Rights groups and activists accuse Uganda of using military courts to suppress dissent.
Byanyima urged Western nations to pressure Uganda for her husband’s release, condemning his alleged abduction. Kenya denies involvement but is investigating the case.
