Haiti’s main airport reopens after month-long closure

Haiti’s Toussaint Louverture International Airport reopened on Wednesday, a month after gang violence in Port-au-Prince forced its closure. Heavy security measures were in place, with Haitian soldiers and Kenyan police, part of a United Nations-backed mission, conducting thorough screenings at checkpoints leading to the airport.

The Guy Malary terminal, which handles domestic flights, also resumed operations.

The airport had been shut down in November for the second time this year after gangs targeted commercial aircraft with gunfire. The Haitian government stated that reopening the airport is part of a broader strategy to restore security and revive economic activity. However, it remains uncertain when commercial flights will fully resume.

This reopening announcement coincides with a decision by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to extend its ban on American airlines flying to Haiti, highlighting ongoing safety concerns. Since the start of the year, gang violence has devastated the country, contributing to political instability and widespread chaos.
