Libya declares force majeure on Zawiya Refinery amid armed clashes

Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) has declared force majeure following significant damage to reservoirs at the Zawiya Refinery, a result of ongoing clashes between armed groups in the area.

Located in western Libya, the Zawiya Refinery processes crude oil from the Sharara field, one of the country’s largest. It plays a critical role in meeting domestic fuel demands, producing diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, and LPG.

With a capacity to process over 100,000 barrels of crude oil daily, the refinery supports Libya’s power stations, industries, and overall energy needs. Its disruption risks significant economic consequences, including increased reliance on fuel imports to bridge supply gaps.

The damage marks another blow to Libya’s volatile oil sector, a vital pillar of its economy, amid ongoing security challenges.
