Tourist killed, another hurt in shark attack at Egypt’s Marsa Alam

A tourist was killed and another injured in a shark attack at Egypt’s Marsa Alam resort, the Environment Ministry announced on Sunday. The nationalities of the victims were not disclosed.

The attack occurred in deep waters outside the designated swimming zone near the resort’s northern jetties, the ministry stated. Swimming beyond the jetties is prohibited, and officials have ordered the jetties closed for two days starting Monday.

Shark encounters in the Red Sea are rare, despite the area’s reputation for vibrant marine life. Marsa Alam, a popular destination for its coral reefs and pristine beaches, has seen such incidents in the past.

In June 2023, a tiger shark killed a Russian national in Hurghada, another Red Sea resort north of Marsa Alam. More recently, a tourist boat capsized in the area last month, leaving four dead and seven missing.

The ministry urged visitors to adhere to safety guidelines to minimize risks while enjoying the region’s natural beauty.
