Somalia takes seat on UN Security Council

African nation Somalia has assumed their seats on the UN Security Council today, marking the start of their two-year term.

The other new members are Pakistan, Panama, Greece, and Denmark.

These five countries replace Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland, whose terms have concluded.

A special ceremony was held to welcome the new members, with Algeria, the current president of the Security Council, and representatives from each of the new member states in attendance.

The UN Security Council comprises 15 members: five permanent members (China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US) with veto power, and 10 non-permanent members elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms.
