Yasir al-Atta, assistant to General al-Burhan, has become one of the most prominent and controversial figures in al-Burhan’s SAF.
His recent statements and positions have raised numerous questions about his intentions and role in the country’s political and military landscape.
Controversial Remarks by al-Atta:
Al-Atta made several statements that sparked significant controversy. One of his most provocative claims was the assertion that the commander-in-chief of the SAF should remain president of the country after elections, serving for multiple consecutive terms. This raised accusations that the SAF sought to consolidate power and dominate Sudan’s political scene.
He also criticized neighboring countries, accusing them of supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which led to diplomatic discontent and raised concerns about his approach to foreign relations.
Expert Opinions on al-Atta’s Statements:
Some analysts believe that al-Atta’s statements reflect the traditional stance of Sudanese Islamists, who view elections primarily as a tool to seize power without fully committing to democracy. Political analyst Mohamed Barghouth pointed out that al-Atta is, in reality, voicing the opinions of the SAF’s commander-in-chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
According to Barghouth, these remarks are aimed at the SAF seeking legitimacy, a legitimacy it lost when Burhan orchestrated a coup against the transitional government in October 2021.
However, others argue that al-Atta is not merely a tool in Burhan’s hands. On the contrary, they suggest that he is a rival and would not hesitate to seize power if given the opportunity, though he is unlikely to take risks in the process.
Allegations of Massacres and Human Rights Violations:
Humanitarian and human rights organizations have accused the SAF of committing widespread violations against civilians, including murder, sexual violence, and using hunger as a weapon.
While these accusations are directed at both sides of the conflict, al-Atta has yet to take a clear stance condemning these violations or calling for investigations.
Ambitions for Power:
There is growing skepticism about al-Atta’s political ambitions and his desire to control the government. In addition to his statements supporting the continued rule of the SAF leadership, observers suggest that he is working to strengthen his position as a potential successor to Burhan, especially in light of internal tensions and conflicts within the SAF.
