A Libyan state minister survived an assassination attempt when gunmen fired on his vehicle in the capital, Tripoli, on Wednesday, according to a government statement.
The Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) condemned the attack, which occurred as an unidentified group targeted the car of Adel Juma, the state minister for cabinet affairs, while he was traveling on a highway.
The government confirmed that Juma’s condition was stable and noted that security forces had launched an investigation to determine the circumstances and identify the attackers.
The GNU, led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah, was established through a U.N.-sponsored process in 2021.
Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in the 2011 NATO-backed revolution, Libya has struggled with ongoing political instability and sporadic outbreaks of violence.
