A United Nations judge from Uganda was convicted Thursday in a British court for forcing a woman into servitude.
Lydia Mugambe, also a Ugandan High Court judge, exploited a young woman, compelling her to work as an unpaid maid and nanny.
Prosecutors revealed Mugambe deceived the victim into traveling to the UK, then confiscated her passport and visa.
During her time studying at Oxford University, Mugambe orchestrated the victim’s arrival under the guise of diplomatic work.
Instead, the woman was subjected to unpaid domestic labor.
The prosecution argued that Mugambe abused her position, taking advantage of the victim’s lack of awareness of her rights.
The victim eventually sought assistance, leading to police intervention.
Mugambe, 49, denied all charges, but jurors at Oxford Crown Court found her guilty on four counts, including forced labor and witness intimidation.
The verdict prompted gasps in the courtroom, and Mugambe appeared unwell.
She is scheduled for sentencing on May 2. Authorities stated that Mugambe used her power to control and exploit a vulnerable individual.
