Chevron reports one missing after fire on Angolan offshore platform

Chevron’s Angolan operations reported on Wednesday that one person remains missing following a fire on its Benguela Belize Lobito Tomboco (BBLT) offshore oil platform on Tuesday morning.

The fire, which broke out around 3 a.m. (0100 GMT) in the platform’s basement, injured 17 people, four of them seriously. The affected personnel were evacuated by helicopter to the mainland for medical treatment, according to both Angolan authorities and Chevron.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The BBLT platform, located in Block 14 approximately 60 miles (97 km) off the Cabinda coast, is operated by Chevron’s subsidiary, Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (CABGOC). The company is coordinating with relevant agencies to assist in search and rescue efforts.

“CABGOC is collaborating with its contracting partners to provide support to the impacted individuals and their families,” Chevron stated.
