Cairo postpones Port Sudan junta-appointed PM Kamel Idris’s visit

Egypt has quietly postponed a planned visit by Kamel Idris, the junta prime minister appointed by SAF chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to head the Port Sudan-based “Government of Hope.”

Idris had announced the trip would be his first foreign stop since taking office, but on the day of departure he posted on X that the visit had been “deferred to an unspecified later date,” offering no explanation.

Lukewarm regional reception

  • Diplomatic sources say several neighbouring capitals also failed to respond to Idris’s requests for meetings.
  • Analysts link Cairo’s hesitation to Emirati pressure over Egypt’s recent willingness to include the Port Sudan authorities in Quad-format talks on Sudan’s conflict.

Domestic headwinds

Since his appointment, Idris has filled cabinet posts with Islamist and former National Congress Party figures, branding the line-up a “Government of Hope.”

  • Attempts to relocate the administration to Khartoum have stalled; reports indicate Idris is instead overseeing construction of an official residence in Port Sudan.

Observers warn the episode could further strain ties between Egypt and Sudan’s military leadership as regional power brokers jockey for influence over the war-torn country’s future.
