The Acting UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Luca Renda, has expressed “deep regret” over a deadly landslide that swept through the village of Tarsin in Jebel Marra on 31 August after heavy rains. Local sources estimate the death toll could range from 300 to 1,000.
Renda extended condolences to the victims’ families and said the UN and its partners are mobilizing assistance, stressing that the humanitarian community “will spare no effort” to reach those in need.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) called the disaster—one of the largest in Sudan’s recent history—another blow to communities already uprooted by the war, which has displaced millions and pushed many to the brink of famine. Jebel Marra has become a refuge for families fleeing violence in El Fasher and surrounding areas, the agency noted, but ongoing fighting and access restrictions are preventing aid groups from reaching Tarsin.
IOM said the tragedy underscores the urgent need for safe, unhindered humanitarian access and urged all parties to respect international humanitarian law and protect civilians and relief workers.
