SLM/A civil chief reaches Tarsin, says toll exceeds first estimates

Mujib al-Rahman al-Zubair, head of the Civil Authority for Liberated Areas affiliated with the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), has arrived in the landslide-stricken village of Tarsin to assess the devastation, the movement’s media official Mohamed Abdelrahman al-Naier said.

After surveying the site, al-Zubair said the death toll is higher than initial reports suggested and described the disaster as one of the worst Jebel Marra has witnessed. He added that survivors’ accounts support his assessment of extensive casualties and losses.

Al-Zubair appealed to the international community, the United Nations and aid organizations to intervene immediately with relief for residents who “have lost everything,” calling for emergency shelter, food, medical support and search-and-rescue assistance.
