Sudan’s Babiker Faisal warns of Islamist grip over Burhan’s army

Sudanese opposition leader Babiker Faisal warned that Islamist influence has deeply entrenched itself within the armed forces since Omar al-Bashir’s 1989 coup.

Faisal, head of the Federalist Gathering, told the Muslim Brotherhood secured control of the Military College beginning in 1990.

He said the movement systematically replaced independent officers with loyal cadres, steadily transforming SAF into an operational arm of the Islamist project.

Citing Islamist leader Sanaa Hamad, Faisal noted former Chief of Staff Hashem Abdel Muttalib admitted ties to the organization and its leadership.

This admission, Faisal argued, confirms that Islamist influence has penetrated military, police, and security institutions, creating a deeply rooted institutional structure.

Remaining aligned with Islamists, he said, risks international isolation, sanctions.

Alternatively, embracing mediation would pit the military against entrenched Islamist officers, potentially triggering internal revolt and renewed instability within the armed forces.
