The European Union has appointed Ambassador Wolfram Vetter as Head of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires to Sudan, the delegation announced.
Vetter will operate from Cairo, Egypt, due to ongoing security threats and a worsening humanitarian crisis in war-torn Sudan.
In his first statement, Vetter said he was honoured to represent the EU amid the country’s ongoing conflict and suffering.
He pledged to maintain and deepen the EU’s long-standing relationship with Sudan while ensuring the people are not forgotten.
The ambassador highlighted the EU’s commitment to supporting Sudan since April 2023 through humanitarian aid and development assistance.
He also underscored EU contributions to ceasefire efforts and the pursuit of a durable and lasting peace across Sudan.
Vetter identified key priorities, including dialogue with youth and women, while continuing support for food security, health, and education.
He further emphasized projects addressing capacity building and climate change, critical areas for Sudan’s stability and future growth.
Describing Sudan as a strategic partner, Vetter praised its natural resources, cultural diversity, and vital geopolitical location in the region.
He lauded the Sudanese community in Europe for serving as a bridge between European and Sudanese societies during turbulent times.
The ambassador concluded that his mission would focus on strengthening ties while safeguarding the welfare and dignity of the Sudanese people.
