Quad powers to push Sudan truce plan in Washington talks

Representatives of the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt will meet in Washington on Friday with Sudan’s warring parties to press for a truce, a senior official familiar with the talks said.

The four governments — often referred to as the Quad — last month jointly urged a humanitarian pause to be followed by a permanent ceasefire and a transition to civilian rule. This week’s talks will focus on that roadmap and on securing a three-month nationwide humanitarian truce, the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“The Quad is acting collectively to apply unified pressure on the parties to stop the fighting and allow aid to reach civilians,” the official said, adding that members of the grouping plan to meet the two sides separately.

Sudan has been gripped by war since April 2023 between General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces. The conflict has killed tens of thousands and displaced nearly 12 million people, driving what aid agencies call the world’s largest displacement and hunger crises.
