RSF takes control of key North Kordofan city amid heavy fighting

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has announced that they had seized control of Bara, a strategic city 40 kilometres from El Obeid in North Kordofan.

The RSF said its forces launched a coordinated assault from three directions, defeating General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army units and allied militias after heavy clashes.

In a statement, the group said capturing Bara was “a significant step” toward consolidating control over key areas in the Kordofan region.

Bara lies on the main route linking Kordofan with the capital, Khartoum, making it vital for controlling military movements across western and northern Sudan.

The area has witnessed weeks of fighting as both sides battle for control of towns surrounding El Obeid.

The RSF claims steady advances under “well-planned military operations.”

Fighting between Burhan’s army and the RSF has raged since April 2023, with the paramilitary group now controlling much of Kordofan and large parts of Darfur.

Violence also continued in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, where RSF forces are reportedly closing in on Burhan army’s last major stronghold in the region.
