The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said on Tuesday it was “horrified” after five Sudanese Red Crescent volunteers were killed while on duty in Bara, North Kordofan.
Three others remain missing following Monday’s attack, deepening fears for the safety of humanitarian workers in the war-torn region.
The oil-rich Kordofan area has become a fierce battleground between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The IFRC said the slain team was on an official mission delivering food aid and were clearly identified by Red Crescent vests and ID cards.
“Any attack on humanitarian teams is unacceptable,” the organisation said, condemning the targeting of aid workers who operate under international protection.
Since the conflict erupted in April 2023, 21 Sudanese Red Crescent staff have been killed, and 25 Red Cross and Red Crescent workers worldwide have lost their lives this year alone.
