Thousands flee North Kordofan amid fierce fighting in Sudan

Around 1,100 people have fled the city of Bara in Sudan’s North Kordofan state amid rising insecurity, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Thursday.

The new exodus brings the total number of displaced civilians to 35,620 over the past four days, underscoring the growing instability gripping the region.

According to the UN agency, most of the displaced have moved toward the city of Ed-Dueim in White Nile state, seeking safety from renewed clashes.

IOM reported several waves of displacement across North Kordofan, including the localities of Sheikan, Rahad, Bara, Umm Ruwaba, and Umm Damm Haj Ahmed between 26 and 29 October.

The fresh fighting adds to the chaos in Sudan, where General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces have been locked in a brutal conflict since April 15, 2023.

Despite numerous regional and international mediation attempts, the war shows no sign of abating, plunging the country deeper into humanitarian catastrophe.

According to UN and local reports, the fighting has killed nearly 20,000 people and forced more than 15 million from their homes—one of the world’s largest displacement crises.

As civilians continue to flee burned villages and bombed towns, hope for peace in Sudan grows increasingly faint, leaving the nation fractured by war and fear.
