The Sudan Founding Alliance (TASIS) has strongly condemned an attack on a humanitarian convoy in the town of Zalingei, Central Darfur, calling on the international community to act urgently to protect relief operations across Sudan.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the alliance said the convoy was on its way from Zalingei to the city of El Fasher when it came under “treacherous drone bombardment”, killing and injuring a number of civilians and destroying several trucks loaded with humanitarian aid destined for war-affected communities.
TASIS described the strike as part of a pattern of “systematic assaults on humanitarian work and civilians” allegedly carried out by “the army of the Islamic Movement / National Congress Party and remnants of the former regime”, accusing the group of grossly violating international norms and basic human values.
The alliance said the attack “exposes the aggressive nature of the war coalition operating out of Port Sudan”, accusing it of “weaponising human suffering as a tool in the political conflict”.
It held what it called “the forces of war” fully responsible for the incident, stressing that “ending Sudan’s tragedies will not be possible without defeating and uprooting the terrorist, obscurantist project” it blames for the current conflict.
TASIS urged the United Nations and international humanitarian organisations to assume their responsibilities by ensuring the protection of relief teams and guaranteeing that life-saving aid can reach civilians in Darfur and other war-hit parts of Sudan swiftly and safely.
