TASIS: Sudan faces only two paths — war or a new national army

Suleiman Sandal, a leading figure in the Sudan Founding Alliance (“TASIS”), said this week’s flurry of initiatives and statements calling for an end to the war have been warmly welcomed by the alliance.

In a post on his Facebook page, Sandal wrote that the new diplomatic moves have placed Sudan before “two, and only two, options.”

The first path, he said, is for the army and its allies to insist on prolonging the war or to seek what he described as “total surrender” of TASIS forces while preserving the old regime.

The second, in his view, is to stop the war and achieve peace on the basis of a united Sudan and the creation of a single, new national army built on professional and inclusive foundations.

Sandal stressed that the second option is the only real way out of the crisis, arguing that a just and comprehensive peace requires rebuilding state institutions on broad national principles that represent all Sudanese.
