The death of Sudanese human rights defender Abdelkhaleq Al Nuweiri in Kampala has sparked widespread sadness among legal circles and within the Sudanese refugee community in Uganda. The Democratic Front for Lawyers announced his passing, saying he died in the Ugandan capital after a sudden illness while travelling from the Kiryandongo refugee settlement in Buliisa District in northern Uganda to Kampala.
His family and relatives had lost contact with him on Tuesday, 18 November 2025, shortly after he left the Sudanese refugee camp for the capital. His disappearance caused deep concern among his family and the legal community, until news of his death was confirmed in Kampala.
Nuweiri’s body was found at the central Kampala mortuary early Monday morning. It is believed he was taken there after his health deteriorated during the trip. His family has set Tuesday afternoon for the funeral, which will take place at the Kololo cemetery in Kampala, with his brother Nabil Al Nuweiri receiving condolences.
Abdelkhaleq Al Nuweiri was known for his long standing defence of human rights. He worked on numerous cases involving political detainees in Sudan before the outbreak of war, and later moved to Uganda with thousands of Sudanese fleeing the conflict. Despite difficult conditions, he continued offering legal and humanitarian support to vulnerable refugees.
The Democratic Front for Lawyers confirmed that the funeral would be held on Tuesday afternoon in Kololo. His death comes at a time when around one hundred thousand Sudanese refugees are living in Uganda, most of them in camps in the north, facing severe hardship due to shrinking humanitarian aid after the UN reduced assistance in May 2025, worsening living conditions and daily struggles.
