UNFPA appeals for 116 million dollars to aid Sudan programs

The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) has warned that its humanitarian response in Sudan is collapsing under severe funding shortages. UNFPA’s country representative in Sudan, Fabrizia Falcione, said only 42% of its 2025 appeal was financed, leaving critical services without support.

She noted that dwindling resources have forced the closure of safe spaces, halted essential supplies and disrupted vital reproductive health care for vulnerable communities. The agency is now seeking $116 million for 2026 to sustain maternal health services, reproductive programmes and protection initiatives nationwide.

Falcione stressed that full funding is essential to prevent widening gaps in lifesaving assistance for millions caught in the protracted conflict. She warned that Sudan’s civil war, raging since April 2023, continues to erode the rights and safety of women and girls across the country.

UNFPA estimates that 12.1 million people are currently at risk of gender-based violence, with urgent protection needs growing daily. Falcione described the continuing violence as an assault on dignity and called for immediate action from international leaders to prevent further atrocities.

The agency continues to deliver maternal and obstetric care, alongside psychosocial support and case management for survivors of gender-based violence. Falcione underlined that these services remain a fragile lifeline for women and girls, sustained only if funding does not fail.
