Kutayla residents bury SAF drone strike victims, urge ICC probe

Residents of Kutayla locality in South Darfur on Wednesday buried more than 100 civilians killed in a drone strike blamed on General al-Burhan’s army (SAF), amid scenes of deep anger and grief.

Eyewitnesses said large crowds joined the funeral procession, including community and civil administration leaders, as the bodies of around 100 victims were laid to rest. Most of those killed were women, children and elderly people, they added, accusing the SAF of deliberately targeting a civilian area.

In a statement, the advocacy group “Darfur Victims” called for an urgent investigation by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to establish responsibility for the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The organisation held the SAF’s commander-in-chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and his regime “fully responsible” for the massacre, saying the continued targeting of civilians in Darfur constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.

The group urged the international community to act immediately to halt repeated attacks on civilians in the region and to protect the population of Darfur from further assaults.
