United Nations agencies have reached a preliminary agreement with Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces to allow humanitarian aid into the besieged city of El Fasher, officials said.
The move comes after weeks of near-total isolation, as severe shortages worsen and civilians remain cut off from life-saving assistance.
World Food Programme emergency director Ross Smith said access to El Fasher is critical, estimating that between 70,000 and 100,000 people are still trapped in the city.
He added that UN food convoys carrying enough supplies to feed 700,000 people for a month are en route to Tawila, an area heavily affected by displacement.
The developments reflect mounting international concern as fighting continues in North Darfur, leaving civilians increasingly out of reach amid a deepening humanitarian crisis.
