Border clash leaves seven Chadian soldiers dead near Sudan

Chad said seven soldiers were killed on Friday in a deadly clash near the Sudanese border, deepening unease along a volatile frontier.

Government spokesman Gassim Cherif said armed fighters crossed into Chadian territory Thursday, sparking a confrontation when troops ordered them to withdraw.

Officials described the incident as an incursion from Sudan, without publicly assigning responsibility for the violence.

The clash unfolded near the border town of Tine, a remote outpost where desert lines blur and tensions often simmer.

Sudan’s civil war, raging since April 2023, has killed tens of thousands and sent shockwaves across neighbouring countries.

The United Nations says about one million Sudanese refugees have sought safety in Chad, stretching resources and local communities.

Cherif urged all parties in Sudan’s conflict to respect Chadian territory and prevent further spillover.

He warned that Chad would not accept its security forces being pulled into a foreign war or more lives being lost.

The United Arab Emirates condemned the attack in a statement, without attributing responsibility.

Recent months have seen repeated security incidents near the border, reflecting the fragile calm along Sudan’s western edge.
